Diary of a Community Orchard 3/6/18: Fruit Cage Prototype Installation

Having seen just how the strawberries were progressing last Friday, and with blueberries and gooseberries starting to develop in the beds, we decided we needed to put some fruit cages on – to keep birds and cats out, but let humans in to harvest.

We installed the first cage using cane balls, bamboo canes, bird netting and judiciously applied staples. Our strawberries are going to make it through to human consumption!

All in, half an hour of messing about without a tape measure (doh!) and we have our first fruit cage. We’ll be installing the second one in Thyme ‘n’ Space on Saturday to protect the gooseberries, blueberries and honeyberries.
