Pleasley Community Orchard is now the proud winner of an international award, the “Green Flag Community Award“, thanks to the dedicated hard work of our team of volunteers, supporters and community members who visit the Orchard.
Having completed all the necessary paperwork that goes into a Green Flag application and submitted it back in February, we went through the judging process at the end of May, with a judge coming to see and hear the story of the Orchard and its impact on the community through events and merely being a lovely place to visit.
We then heard in June that we’d won, with the arrival of a flag in the post, but had to wait until 00:01 on 16th July to be able to announce this wonderful news as it was embargoed until then. Sitting on that fantastic news was hard work :).
On 16th July, we had a call from Mansfield 103.2 FM to interview us, and get some soundbites for the news that day. You can download the 45 second sound recording of the news item here.
So on 18th July, four of the team set off down to the award presentation ceremony at the Guildhall in Northampton. It’s a hard job, but someone’s got to go there, have a glass of Prosecco upon entry, be presented with the award by the mayor, and then have a lovely afternoon tea, all courtesy of the Green Flag award’s Keep Britain Tidy group.
It was amazing to see how many awards were presented, and some councils ended up picking up as many as 39 for their parks (well done Nottingham !!!). We didn’t see Mansfield Council pick up their awards, as we believe that they went to one of the other two presentations held by Green Flag this week, but well done.
We’ll be having a flag hoisting ceremony very soon, so keep them peeled – Pleasley’s got loads to celebrate and it’s so great to see such positive recognition and affirmation from international organisations for all the hard work of community building here. Thanks again to you all – you are amazing!
